about

Matthew Biederman has been working across media and milieus , architectures and systems, communities and continents since 1990. He creates installations, screen-based works and performances that utilize light, space and sound to reflect on the intricacies of perception mediated through digital technologies. Since 2008 he has been a co-author of Arctic Perspective Initiative, dedicated to clarifying forms of knowledge, going from traditional knowledge, culture and new technologies all the way to the northern circumpolar region. His work has been featured at: Lyon Bienniale, Istanbul Design Bienniale, The Tokyo Museum of Photography, ELEKTRA, Montreal Bienniale, Ars Electronica, and CTM among many others.

Science is continually looking closer or farther to help to unravel nature’s phenomena. Utilizing a reaction-diffusion system, Morphogerador is a reflection on biological processes that create structural colour as we see in such insects like the Morpho butterfly, and many species of beetles. These reaction-diffusion systems were applied by Alan Turning in his seminal article “The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis” to describe biomorphological systems. Morphogerador uses similar algorithms to create an ever-evolving, yet stable system that continually brings the perspective closer and widens it without ever reaching the smallest or widest view.
